Norikura Kogen (highland) is a quaint alpine village on the east side of Mount Norikura (3,026m), about 60min from Matsumoto and 90min from Takayama by car.
Although it’s well known as an outdoor sports destination, it shouldn’t be overlooked as an Onsen village with 3 natural hot spring sources that can be enjoyed at 18 day-use locations and over 60 locations if you stay overnight.
The Birthplace of The Japanese Alps
The phrase “Japanese Alps” was first coined by archaeologist William Gowland (1842–1922) as he talked about the Hida Mountain Range in Gifu Prefecture, and later popularized by Reverend Walter Weston (1861–1940) after his journal about exploring this area titled “Mountaineering and exploration in the Japanese Alps“ was published.
